Tanker Spills

State Highway Spills , Baltimore City/County, MD

ACE regularly responds to liquid releases related to tractor trailers on roadways, highways, interstates and Maryland state highways. Releases may be the results of saddle tank ruptures, accidents and/or leaking transports.

ACE personnel are fully equipped to respond in a timely manner and handle any incident. All of our environmental response specialists have completed a minimum of 40 hours of Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training, in addition to rigorous hazardous materials technician and specialist training. All personnel enroll in continuing education and annual refresher courses to stay current on all environmental safety issues.

ACE has handled just about every type of highway accident/emergency response cleanup. Our team of environmental response specialists are trained to handle accident cleanups from the most basic to complex.

ACE can assist with efforts to recover and salvage product/cargo using heavy equipment. We can also assist with complying with state directives for soil sampling, potable well sampling, groundwater sampling and soil/gas vapor samples. Our sampling techniques are safe, fast and reliable.

Home Heating Oil Spills

Lothian, Anne Arundel County, MD

After a furnace maintenance visit, the home owner discovered a heating oil release to the basement. Approximately one-inch of standing oil was observed on the porous concrete/gravel basement floor and around the furnace. Vapors were noted in the basement and throughout the house. Observations during initial response activities indicated that most of the oil had soaked into the cracks in the concrete and alongside the brick retaining walls in the vicinity of the spill. The impacted area was approximately 20 feet by 20 feet.

ACE mobilized equipment to initiate spill clean-up activities, including scrubbing the concrete floor and brick walls with degreaser, removing previously place sorbent material, installing a vapor extraction fan to remove vapors from the affected area (and prevent migration into the house), and also conducted an application of microbes to assist with vapor issues. The MDE directed additional work to investigate soils beneath the concrete slab. Initially, soil cores were conducted through the concrete floor for the collection of field readings. The results of the field survey detected elevated readings as high as 900 parts per million by volume (ppm-v). Based on the elevated readings, soil excavation activities were planned.

Ace initiated soil excavation activities including breaking up the concrete and hand digging impacted soils beneath the foundation. A total of 8.8 tons of impacted soil was excavated and properly disposed. A total of five post-excavation samples were collected for analysis. Based on the analytical results, case closure was recommended and the case was closed.product and/or dissolved-phase recovery.

Residential Oil Tank Spill

Catonsville, Baltimore County, Maryland

ACE responded to a release of #2 heating oil due to an overfill during delivery to a home owner oil tank. The spill resulted in oil being released to the ground surface of the yard, sprayed onto the side of the residence structure, patio, driveway and adjacent vehicle.

In addition to surficial clean-up activities, approximately 55 tons of impacted soil was excavated and removed.

Based on the continued presence of vapors in the home, indoor air sampling was conducted, a subsurface investigation was initiated and a vapor extraction system consisting of a one-horsepower (HP) blower was installed to remove vapors from the residence.

Further MDE directives resulted in a work plan to conduct a microbe injection, post-injection soil sampling, and sump water sampling. The results indicated the following:

Sump sampling activities indicate concentrations above residential MDE GNCS for TPH-DRO; however, TPH-DRO concentrations significantly declined between the two sampling events.
The post injection soil sampling indicated that concentrations are basically below MDE GNCS concentrations with the exception of one soil sample had a concentration of 235 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) which is only slightly above the MDE GNCS for residential soil of 230 mg/kg.
Air samples from the vapor extraction system indicate that concentrations of TPH-DRO have continued to decline and have not been detected since September 2015.
Indoor air samples indicate one compound, naphthalene, exceeds applicable standards.

The vapor extraction system continues to operate.

Storm Drain Contaminations

Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, Maryland

A tanker truck overturned and approximately 200-300 gallons of heating oil was released to the ground surface and immediately into a storm drain. The storm drain traversed beneath the adjacent roadway to an outfall located approximately one-half mile to an outfall discharging to a tributary.

ACE responded to the release and, as directed by the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) and the local fire department, implemented measures to minimize impacts, removing and properly disposing spent sorbent material, and investigating the extent of impacts.

Upon arrival, heating oil was visible at the storm water drains outfall. ACE personnel deployed vacuum trucks to remove free product and booms were placed in the storm water outfall area to minimize impacts. Free standing heating oil and contaminated debris were observed in storm water manholes. The fire department provided a fire truck and dispensed approximately 5,000-gallons of water to flush the storm drain system. The flushed product was contained and removed for proper disposal.

ACE continued to monitor the impacted areas periodically, including the storm water system and the storm water retention pond, with maintenance visits biased to rain events. Absorbent pads and booms were maintained and replaced as needed to prevent migration.

Upon completion, approximately 11,094 gallon of liquids and 15 drums of spent sorbents and sediment were removed for proper disposal.

Over 700+ gallons of diesel traveled from the parking lot into the nearby storm drain which fed to a nearby retention pond. The pond required a complete excavation to remove the contaminated soils and begin rebuilding to its original design.

How We ACE’d It

The ACE Team brought in an engineering partner to provide complete oversight of our reconstruction activities and make recommendations on Erosion & Sediment Controls. With proper coordination, ACE removed the petroleum impacted soils and reconstructed the pond with the proper combination of sand, clay and rip rap to restore the sediment pond to its original purpose.
